The Mercedes X Class was initially unveiled in 2017 at the World Premier in Cape Town, South Africa. It shares its chassis with the iconic Nissan Navara, but also boasts the standard technology features of the luxury brand and has some adapted engineering to fit the German giants’ standards of vehicle.
Housing a turbocharged V6 engine, the X Class is a true powerhouse, and matches the torque of many of their competitors. Over the course of the production of this vehicle, Mercedes opted to try both manual and automatic gearboxes, to see which suited their client base. They also created both a petrol and diesel variant, both of which had strong performance statistics and received great reviews.
Ultimately, the main function of this vehicle was to bring luxury somewhere that previously lacked it, and Mercedes achieved this in style. Their implementation of their iconic characteristics shine through the vehicle in both performance and enjoyability.
However, production of the models stopped in 2020 after demand was too low. Seemingly, luxury isn’t needed in this type of vehicle...yet! However, that does now make these trucks extremely rare, and a driving experience off-road in a X Class is a rare glimpse into what the future of trucking could look like.
