The latest data from the Department for Transport (DfT) we have obtained here at DrivingExperience HQ reveals that Britain's 20 mph limits are being continually broken. The insight shows that 84% of vehicles have exceeded the 20 mph speed limit, and alarmingly that 52% have broken the speed limit by 10 mph or more.
Further analysis underlines that there's been virtually no improvement in five years in vehicles slowing down in 20 mph zones, fuelling the debate among critics as to whether they are a waste of time and taxpayer money.
Imran Malek, corporate sales manager at DrivingExperience.com, says: "It's shocking to see the level of speeding on 20 mph roads."
"While they have caused division in some areas and among some drivers, we would urge all motorists to drive sensibly and observe speed limits, keeping thrills to the track with a driving experience."
Additional insight also shows that speeding in 20 mph zones is far higher than on other road types. Less than half of vehicles have exceeded the 70 mph speed limit on motorways and dual carriageways, plus 60 mph single carriageways, and that a little over half have gone too fast on 30 mph roads – compared to the 84% on 20mph roads.
Imran adds: "There's clearly a sizeable proportion of vehicles flouting the 20 mph speed limit, with some opposition arguing that there's been a blanket approach when more targeted measures are required."
"Whatever the driving situation, it's common courtesy to stay alert behind the wheel, ensuring all road users, including cyclists and pedestrians, stay safe."
