Classic Cars That Will Make You Wish You Were Born 50 Years Ago - News

The 10 Most Iconic Classic Cars That’ll Make You Weep With Joy

There are cars. And then there are cars. The sort that doesn’t just get you from A to B, but makes you want to take the long way. Through a mountain pass. In Tuscany. With sunglasses on and a cigarette you don't even smoke. These are the classics - the automotive equivalent of a well-aged whisky, a Rolling Stones vinyl, or Sean Connery in a tux.

So here it is, my strange, slightly lustful love letter to ten of the most iconic, most sexy, most damn right essential classic cars to ever grace the tarmac.

1. Jaguar E-Type

If the Mona Lisa had wheels and a 4.2-litre straight-six under the bonnet, this would be it. Enzo Ferrari called it the most beautiful car ever made, and frankly, who are you to argue? Long bonnet, curves like a ‘60s pin-up, and the kind of driving experience that feels like being personally serenaded by the British Empire.

2. Porsche 911 (Classic)

Now, I’ll admit a soft spot here. I love Porsches. I mean, really love them. The classic 911 is a masterpiece of German precision engineering, wrapped up in a rear-engined layout that makes no logical sense - but feels oh-so right. It’s like the car equivalent of doing everything wrong and still coming out on top. Pure, air-cooled magic.

3. Ford Mustang (65 Fastback)

This car doesn’t purr. It growls. It’s the rock ‘n roll of motoring: loud, unapologetic, and ready to throw a punch. The Mustang made muscle cars a thing, and let’s be honest, it’s why most American roads exist - just so this could thunder down them, shaking windows and breaking necks.

4. Chevrolet Corvette Stingray (C2)

If James Bond had been American, he’d have driven this. Sleek, sinister, and so pointy it looks like it could split atoms, the Stingray was less of a car and more of a chrome-plated weapon. Just don't try turning at speed. Or braking. Or going in a straight line. But you'll look cool doing it, so who cares?

5. Aston Martin DB5

Yes, yes, obviously. The DB5 is so charming it practically introduces itself with a martini and a raised eyebrow. It is Bond. Graceful, fast enough, and oozing British suave from every leather-stitched pore. It’s not just a car; it’s a tuxedo on wheels.

6. Cadillac Eldorado (59)

Right, now we’re talking. This one’s a personal favourite. I’m a sucker for big, flamboyant American cars - and the Eldorado is big. It’s basically a small country with tailfins. It looks like it was designed by a man with a gold tooth and a deep love for sequins. It doesn’t drive so much as it parades, preferably to the sound of a brass band and a cheering crowd. It’s ridiculous, excessive, and completely fabulous... I'll take mine in pink, please.

7. Lamborghini Miura

Let’s be honest - the Miura didn’t just break the mould. It melted it into a sculpture of Italian excess. It was the first real supercar. The engine in the middle looks as though it could make you forget your own name, and a driving experience that’s part opera, part rollercoaster. Bellissimo.

8. Ferrari 250 GTO

The Holy Grail. If you’ve got a spare £50 million lying around, you could probably pick one up. If not, you can still dream. It isn’t just a car - it’s a moving sculpture. It’s art. It's a unicorn. But if you do drive one, I'd park it somewhere really safe, like a vault: protected by dragons.

9. Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing

The doors go up, like a bird. That should be enough. But no - this thing is also stunning, fast, and so stylish it makes most modern cars look like microwaves on wheels (I'm looking at you Tesla). Plus, it came out in the '50s, when most cars looked like toasters. This? This was sci-fi.

10. Mini Cooper (Classic)

Small car, massive legacy. The Mini was the underdog that became a cultural icon. It’s cheeky, charming, and corners like it’s on rails. Plus, it's little and quirky, what's not to love.

So there you have it. Ten absolute legends of the automotive world. Each one worthy of a shrine, a poem, or at least a deeply emotional poster in your garage.

And yes - one day, when I’m making millions (through talent, charisma, and maybe a bit of dumb luck), I assure you a number of these glorious machines will be sitting in my personal collection, possibly under velvet covers, occasionally whispered to. And I'm sure I'm not the only one.

But until then, if you’ve got even a hint of taste - and an appreciation for the smell of petrol, polished chrome, and proper old school motoring - you don’t have to just dream about it. We offer a fantastic selection of Classic Car Experiences, featuring some absolute beauties: Aston Martins, Ford Mustangs, and the ever-so-charming classic Mini, to name a few. Trust me. Once you’ve driven one, your heart will no longer belong to you.
