Rare 1958 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa Up For Auction

Rare 1958 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa Up For Auction - News

This rare and gorgeous two-seater 1958 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa has found its way onto the auction podium and is set to be put up for auction this February. The car has a guide price of between £34 million and £38 million.

The 1958 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa is a rare sports car model. Manufactured by Ferrari between 1957 and 1961, with only 33 ever made. It is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful body designs ever created, with its open-top design and "Pontoon Fendered" style.

The car was created in response to new racing rules that limited maximum engine displacement to 3 litres for the 24 Hours of Le Mans and World SportsCar Championship races. The 250 TR went on to achieve many racing successes, winning 10 World Sports Car Championship races, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1958, 1960, and 1961, the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1958, 1959, and 1961, the Targa Florio in 1958, the 1000 Km Buenos Aires in 1958 and 1960, and the Pescara 4 Hours in 1961. These results led to World Sports Car Championship constructors' titles for Ferrari in 1958, 1960, and 1961.

This specific car, chassis no. 0738, was built by Italian coachbuilder Sergio Scaligetti and won four races in 20 official races during its active competition life. It is one of the last TRs to retain its original engine and gearbox pairing and is one of only 19 examples to leave the Ferrari Factory with the highly desired 'pontoon fender' bodywork. After a complete restoration at Ferrari Classiche in 2013, it was used as a pizza delivery vehicle.

It is now being sold by Sotheby's Sealed and is described as coming from a prominent American collection, where it has remained for over a decade. Ferrari 250 Testa Rossas are rarely available for sale, and prices have soared in recent years. In 2009, a 250 Testa Rossa was sold for $16.4 million (at the time, a world record for a car sold at auction), while a non-Pontoon Fendered model was sold for a reported $40 million in 2014 through a U.K. classic car dealer. The sealed auction will take place in Detroit, Michigan from February 21st to 23rd, where bidding will be private.
