Information About the MG GT

Four years after the introduction of their B Roadster open top sports car, MG unveiled the fixed roof variant - the MG GT - in the autumn of 1965. It was a defining iteration of its predecessor for many reasons - not least of all because it birthed the ‘sporty hatchback’ style of car that’s gone on to inform many others since in the last 60 years.

With a revolutionary greenhouse designed by Italian car coachbuilders Pininfarina, engineering wise the GT doesn’t vary too wildly from the B Roadster, save for different suspension springs, and a windscreen that was more easily serviceable in case repairs were needed.

Powering wise however, it still runs on the same 1798cc 4 Cylinder inline petrol engine. And with it offering out 95 bhp, with acceleration from 0 - 60 mph in just over 12 seconds, it achieves impressive top speeds of 105 mph.

Cool Facts About the MG GT

Because of its groundbreaking significance in birthing the ‘sporty hatchback’ styling, the MG GT has remained a highly praised car. In fact, as recently as 2019, American motoring magazine Road and Track featured it in an article listing its designers Pininfarina’s “16 most beautiful designs that aren’t Ferraris”.

Collectors and enthusiasts of the GT should also be aware of a limited edition run, called the MGB Berlinette. This was designed by Belgian coach builder Jacques Coune, and only 56 were ever made, and it currently goes for around £21,800 on the second hand market.
