Information About the MG Midget
Produced over the course of four iterations from 1961 to 1979, the MG Midget was the British Motor Corporation's slightly more premium take on the deluxe variant of the MkII Austin-Healey Sprite.
The Sprite had primarily been produced to fill the gap left vacant in the market by the end of the production of the old MG T-type Midget in 1955, so by reintroducing the Midget badge that had proved so popular, it provided a golden opportunity for it to be restored to buyers who had loved it so much.
Much like the Austin-Healey equivalent, the Midget has a rear suspension with quarter-elliptic leaf springs, 7 inch drum brakes, all topped off with power from a 1491cc 4 Cylinder inline engine that offers 65 bhp and top speeds of 101 mph.
Cool Facts About the MG Midget
Whilst the MG Midget was in production for 18 consecutive years, there was a project running almost concurrently in its first few years from 1960 to 1964, called ADO34. The plans were to try and create a new front wheel drive Mini style roadster, that would succeed both the MG Midget and Austin-Healey Sprite.
Suffice to say, it never got off the ground and was very much in ‘development hell’, but the Mini-styled concept car that was made as part of the project is still in existence today, and can be seen on display at the Heritage Motor Centre in Gaydon, Warwickshire.
