Pontiac Driving Experience
The Pontiac Firebird is an American car that was manufactured and sold by Pontiac from 1967 to 2002. It was unveiled on February 23, 1967, alongside GM's Chevrolet division's platform-sharing Camaro, as a pony car to compete with the Ford Mustang.
Smokey and the Bandit was responsible for much of the Firebirds iconography. Released in 1977, the film follows two bootleggers as they try to illegally move 400 cases of Coors beer from Texas to Georgia. The film was a surprise success, grossing $126.7 million in North America from a $4.3 million budget. After Star Wars, it was the second-highest-grossing film of 1977. Aside from Burt Reynolds' outstanding performance, Smokey and the Bandit is often remembered for the Pontiac Trans Am.
You could leave the theatre and buy a Trans Am, but you couldn't leave and buy a Millenium Falcon. Thus the Firebird was the last scream of the 1960s muscle car age, and an instant automobile legend.
As legislation was pushing muscle cars out - it was only Chevrolet and Pontiac who decided to stick with it - producing the Camaro and Firebird. Now - everything about the Trans Am was meant to be loud and brash - this was achieved. From the ridiculously loud engine; exterior shape; beaked grill; fake hood intake; the black and gold styling; the T-Top windows; and the giant firebird across the bonnet - now known as ‘Screaming Chicken’. Even among muscle cars - the Firebird really really really stands out - and that’s why enthusiasts love it.
