It's been announced this week that Goodwood Motor Circuit are adding a series of special events to their calendar for the rest of this year, all to mark and remember the life of the late great Sir Stirling Moss, who passed away in April last year.
Goodwood was where Moss made his racing debut in 1948, a day after he turned 19, and it was also the site of an infamous collision he had when he raced his Lotus in the 1962 Glover Trophy that took place here.
One of the new events at the historic track in East Sussex will be the return of one that actually started last year, which is the Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy, which will now become an annual fixture in the Goodwood calendar, and is set to potentially become the largest such gathering of Moss competition cars ever.
The commemorative events will get under way with the annual Festival of Speed from 8th - 9th July, which will also see Moss' legendary Mercedes-Benz 300SLR '722' that took him to victory at the 1955 Mille Miglia on exhibition to the public, making this one of the rare few times it will have been seen outside of the Mercedes Museum in Stuttgart, Germany.
More memorabilia, including the Lotus 18 that saw Moss take pole position at the Formula 1 Monaco and German Grand Prix championships in 1961 and the The Rob Walker Racing Ferrari 250 GT SWB that he won the Tourist Trophy with in the same year will be showcased in a rare on-track event during this year's Goodwood Revival festival from 17th - 19th September.
The third and final of the special events will then be another round of the Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy, and this will take place during the 78th Members' Meeting from 16th - 17th October.
Speaking on the announcement of these special events, The Duke of Richmond said: "We hope that fans at our events, and around the world, will join us in celebrating his racing career and bidding farewell to 'Mr Goodwood' in 2021. Stirling's supreme skill and love for his sport will continue to be remembered at Goodwood for many years to come."
