Silverstone design firm shines new light on classic cars future - News

One tricky issue that has re-entered the debating chamber for motorists again of late is that of the green movement, and particularly where this leaves fans of Classic Cars, if the UK Government is to push through with their plans to phase out all petrol and diesel vehicles in order to meet net zero carbon emissions targets by 2030.

Regular readers will recall earlier this year our report on RBW, and the launch of their EV MG Roadster in October 2020. But now another firm is rising through the ranks and is taking it to the next level, with a revolutionary new approach to help keep much loved vintage sets of wheels on the roads.

Based on the Technology Park at Silverstone, Lunaz Design was founded three years ago in 2018 by entrepreneurs Navid Mirtorabi and Christopher Jones, who are taking the upcycling approach to ensuring a whole host of much loved heritage cars can stay on the road even with the move away from conventional fuel to electric vehicles.

Their fleet of upcycled vehicles is impressive too; a converted 1961 Rolls Royce by Lunaz Phantom V, an electrified Range Rover Classic, and a whole host of Jaguars and Rolls Royces that have been lovingly upgraded using techniques that aim to restore at least 70% of the existing weight and embedded carbon within the vehicle.

It has also had backing and support from some very well known faces too. In June of this year, none other than David Beckham confirmed that he was becoming an investor in the company along with the Reuben and Barclay families.

And on Wednesday night's edition of The One Show on BBC One (8th September), Absolutely Fabulous star and comedienne Jennifer Saunders appeared with Mirtorabi and Jones in a film piece showcasing their work, as well as getting to drive their restored 1961 Bentley Continental Flying Spur.

Writing on her Instagram about her visit, Saunders said "(It was a) totally fascinating and inspiring day … Converting classic cars so they can be driven on the roads in the future … they are committed to not throwing away or mothballing … We do up old houses, we can do the same to cars." Looked at from that perspective, you have to agree with her, and we really admire the forward thinking action Lunaz are undertaking.

Hopefully upcycled vintage car experiences could be a thing of our future here at Driving Experience. In the meantime, if you fancy booking a Classic Car Experience or Road Tour in a Jaguar or MG, you can visit our Classic Cars page on the website today to book from available dates on our Events Calendar or through purchase of our Gift Vouchers!
