The Aston Martin DB9 is a two-door grand touring car produced by the British car manufacturer Aston Martin from 2004 to 2016. It was available in both coupé and convertible versions, with the convertible referred to as the "Volante."
The DB9 succeeded the DB7, which was manufactured from 1994 to 2004. Designed by Ian Callum and Henrik Fisker, the DB9 was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2003, while the Volante made its debut the following year at the Detroit Auto Show.
Aston Martin showcased the DB9 Volante convertible at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2004, and production began in February 2005. To enhance safety in the event of a rollover, the Volante features reinforced windshield pillars and two deployable hoops behind the rear seats. These hoops are always active, and if triggered, they will shatter the car's rear window.
For a smoother driving experience, Aston Martin adjusted the Volante's suspension system by softening the springs and reducing the weight of the anti-roll bars, resulting in a gentler ride. The convertible top is made of folding fabric and can be opened in just seventeen seconds. The Volante weighs 1,882 kg (4,150 lb), making it slightly heavier than its coupé counterpart.
Additionally, Aston Martin Racing has adapted the DB9 into two racing car versions: the Aston Martin DBR9 and DBRS9. The DBR9 has achieved notable success, winning pole position in the American Le Mans Series, the FIA GT Championship, and the 12 Hours of Sebring in 2005, its debut year.
