Coming from the last in the line of the first generation of the Camaro's production back in 1969, the Chevrolet Camaro SS (Super Sport, in case you’re wondering what it stood for) has gained adoration and fans across the world - not least because of its extensive use in films and TV shows, including the Fast & Furious series of movies starring Paul Walker.

But for all its ubiquity, it more than has the - pardon the pun - muscle when it comes to performance and power, making it one of the greatest American muscle cars of all time. It packs a whopping 8 litre big block V8 engine under the bonnet, pumping out 580 bhp.

And whilst it may seem less rapid compared to the modern day muscle or supercar, it’s top speeds of 126 mph are unbelievably fast for a car from this golden age of motoring, and its acceleration from 0 - 60 mph in 5.4 seconds highlights that as well. Its handling and traction combines to make a driving experience that will sit fondly on the memory for years to come.

The 1969 Camaro SS was one of Chevrolet’s most popular models that year. Sales figures from that time estimate that just under 35,000 models came off the production line, although it is now believed that less than half of those are still in a drivable condition.

You may have heard talk of certain Camaro SS models being sold as 1970 models. But we can scotch those rumours, as even though General Motors used old shots of the 1969 Camaro SS for publicity for the 1970 model, all the ‘69 models were sold with 1969 VIN codes.
