In 2010, BMW began to develop their ethos towards a fresh outlook and approach to their brand. The new BMW ‘i Division’ saw a focus shift towards a new fleet of electric vehicles, something previously unheard of for BMW.
The BMW i8 was the first product of this change, and laid the foundations for BMW’s potential in the electric automotive industry. BMW’s i8 is one of the trailblazers for electric supercars and continues to thrive today.
Officially unveiled in 2013 at the International Motor Show in Germany, the i8 spent almost 4 years in development and production, and once revealed, it was easy to see why. The stunning shape, outstanding interior and tremendous efficiency was only bettered by the incredible performance they had created with the i8.
The power on this hybrid supercar comes from its 7.1 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which offers an impressive 374 bhp. Now, doubtlessly, there will be some sceptics who aren’t entirely sold on the idea of supercars powered on anything besides fuel being much good.
But the i8 delivers more and then some. It thunders to a supreme top speed of 159 mph, with the capability to accelerate from 0 - 60 mph in a lightning fast 4.4 seconds. So really, until you’ve tried the future of supercars out for yourself, you’re stuck in a timewarp…
